TCP Transmission Control Protocol. The connection-oriented,
transport-level protocol used in the TCP/IP suite of protocols
TIFF Tagged Image File Format. Format for storing bit-mapped images.
Typically used for scanned documents and uncompressed images
UNIX A 32-bit multitasking, multiuser operating system originally developed
by AT&T
URL Uniform Resource Locator. A way of specifying the location of
publicly available information on the Internet
USB Universal Serial Bus. A plug-and-play interface between a computer
and peripheral devices (scanners, printers etc)
UTC Universal Time Coordinated
WINS Windows Internet Name Service
XML Extensible Markup Language. Describes how to define a collection of
data. Sometimes referred to as metadata
YP Yellow Pages. The security and file-access databases on UNIX systems
These databases are now known as Network Information Services
